Attention Southeast Michiganians!!
Tune in to Zonya’s Special Pledge Program
Monday, March 10 at 1:30 pm on WTVS, Channel 56
Here’s your chance to join me in supporting Detroit Public Television and all the great programming it offers during their March pledge drive. In addition to learning about the great-tasting health benefits found in dark chocolate and fish, you’ll get to watch me prepare my delicious Chocolate No-Bakes, Cocoa Lava Kisses and Salmon Marsala recipes.
Of course, the best part about public television that I’m so proud to be part of, is the educational programming it offers. And because public television is commercial-free, that means this kind of programming can only be provided with the continued support from people like you! So… if you like seeing “Zonya’s Health Bites,” and other programs on WTVS, tell your friends to join you during my special pledge program on March 10, 1:30-2:30 pm on channel 56.
Polyphenols NEVER Tasted So GOOD!
In my special pledge program noted above, I’ll be highlighting the beneficial attributes of polyphenols. So where’s the connection between polyphenols and my Chocolate No-Bakes and Cocoa Lava Kisses recipes? Glad you asked!!! The same polyphenols found in fresh fruits and vegetables can also be found in both DARK CHOCOLATE and COCOA POWDER. Hallelujah! … I KNEW chocolate was a vegetable. Okay, maybe I can’t quite go that far, but it is true that dark chocolate that hasn’t been processed with alkali does contain beneficial polyphenols – and that’s a good thing. So what are polyphenols and why are they beneficial you ask? Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds found in plant-based foods and provide the health benefit of lowering blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health.
Now, I’m not suggesting that you start replacing your fruits and vegetables with chocolate. But the next time you have a chocolate craving, go for the dark and look for chocolate NOT processed with alkali – and you’ll get an extra Polyphenols Punch with your next chocolate fix!
Pumping Up Your Omega 3’s
The other recipe I’ll be showcasing on the pledge special March 10 is my Salmon Marsala. This time instead of making the recipe with brown rice, I make it with Flax Rice Spirals pasta from Eden Foods that feature whole-grain brown rice AND ground flax seed. I always choose whole-grain pasta from Eden, and I especially love this one with the added flax seed. Why flax seed? Because just as the salmon contains super beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids to fight heart disease, flax also boasts many of the same anti-inflammatory properties. So between the salmon and the Flax Rice Spirals, you’ll definitely be pumping upyour Omega 3’s.
Highlights from “Oprah & Bob’s Best Life
So what's it like to be on a giant Best Life bus with Bob Greene and his team for 4 weeks traveling the nation from grocery store to grocery store; signing people up to live their Best Life?? Two words: totally awesome! I especially enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life, in all stages of the weight struggle, including many who have won the battle the right way with permanent healthy eating habits and regular exercise. How fun and how rewarding!!
So what exactly was my role on the tour? I entertained and educated with interactive and fun presentations of Best Life recipes from smoothies and muesli to soup and salad. Hundreds of Best Life fans joined us at each location, waiting to meet with Bob, sign their “Best Life Contract,” and get more tips from Janis Jibrin, MS, RD—the Best Life nutritionist.
